Avoiding PFAS in your wardrobe is harder than it sounds, not because the information does not exist, but because the clothing industry has not been required to put it on the label. What you can see is the fiber content. What you cannot see is the list of chemical treatments applied after the fabric was made.
That gap is navigable. Here is how.
Know Where PFAS Are Most Likely to Be
PFAS are applied to clothing as surface treatments, not incorporated into the fiber. The garment categories most likely to carry them are those marketed with water-resistance, stain-resistance, or wrinkle-resistance as a feature. In practical terms that means: rain jackets and outdoor gear, DWR-treated activewear, stain-resistant trousers and workwear, and wrinkle-resistant dress shirts.
Activewear is a particularly significant category because it combines PFAS treatment likelihood with the highest-exposure wear conditions. The Texas Attorney General's 2026 investigation into Lululemon confirmed that PFAS had been used in its DWR activewear products through early 2024. That investigation was not about an outlier brand. It reflected standard industry practice in performance activewear across the market.
If a garment is marketed with any of these descriptors: water-repellent, DWR-treated, stain-resistant, quick-dry, or moisture-wicking without specifying how that property is achieved, the probability of PFAS involvement is meaningful and worth investigating before purchase.
Read Beyond the Fiber Label
The fiber content label is not where PFAS disclosures appear. It lists what the fabric is made of, not what was done to it. A garment labeled 100% polyester can carry a significant PFAS coating. A garment labeled 87% nylon, 13% spandex tells you nothing about its finishing chemistry.
What to look for beyond the fiber label: a restricted substances list published by the brand, third-party certification marks, and explicit disclosure of finishing chemistry. Brands that disclose this information proactively are the exception, not the rule. Brands that carry independent certification have had it verified externally.
Use Certification as Your Primary Signal
Third-party certification is the only verifiable signal available to consumers for PFAS in finished garments. The most relevant certifications are:
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests finished garments for over 100 substances including specific PFAS compounds. Certification must be renewed annually and applies to the tested garment. It is the most widely available consumer-facing textile certification and the most directly relevant to harmful substance content.
Bluesign covers chemical inputs throughout the production process, including dyeing and finishing chemistry. It is a supply chain standard rather than a finished product test, but it restricts PFAS use at the processing stage.
The EU Ecolabel covers environmental production criteria and restricts some chemical inputs, including PFAS, in products sold in the European market.
A brand claiming to be PFAS-free without one of these certifications behind it is making an unverifiable claim. The Lululemon case is the sharpest illustration of why that distinction matters: a restricted substances list and wellness marketing positioning did not prevent PFAS from being present in the product.
Choose Fibers That Do Not Need PFAS to Perform
The most durable solution to PFAS in activewear is choosing a fiber whose performance properties do not depend on a chemical surface treatment. PFAS-based DWR coatings exist because synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon are hydrophobic: they repel water at the surface rather than managing it through the fiber structure. A DWR coating enhances that surface repellency for water-resistance and stain-resistance applications.
TENCEL Lyocell manages moisture through a completely different mechanism. It is hydrophilic, absorbing sweat into the fiber's core rather than repelling it at the surface. That structural moisture management means the performance rationale for a PFAS coating does not apply. There is no surface to treat because the performance is built into the fiber.
Kaplan et al. (2014), in Fibers and Polymers, documented TENCEL's moisture management and thermal comfort advantages in active wear. The Sempre Leggings are 92% TENCEL Lyocell, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. The certification is independently tested and renewed annually. Starting with a fiber that does not require PFAS treatment to perform removes the exposure pathway at the source rather than managing it after the fact.
For Outdoor Gear, Consider Non-Fluorinated DWR Alternatives
For categories where water repellency is genuinely necessary, such as rain shells and outdoor technical gear, non-fluorinated DWR alternatives have become available. These use wax-based, silicone-based, or polyurethane-based chemistries that provide water repellency without fluorine chemistry. Performance at high-precipitation intensity is generally lower than long-chain PFAS DWR, but for most use cases it is adequate.
Brands including Patagonia, Arc'teryx, and several others have published timelines for transitioning to non-fluorinated DWR. Look for explicit disclosure of the DWR chemistry used, not just a claim of being PFAS-free, and verify against a restricted substances list or certification where possible.
Wash PFAS-Treated Garments Carefully
For synthetic garments with DWR treatments already in your wardrobe, washing practice affects how quickly the coating degrades and releases. Hot water washing degrades DWR coatings faster than cold water, releasing more PFAS into the wash water with each hot cycle. Cold water washing extends coating life and reduces per-wash PFAS release. Air drying rather than tumble drying also reduces coating degradation.
This is harm reduction, not elimination. A PFAS-treated garment in your wardrobe is releasing PFAS into both the water system during washing and toward your skin during wear, regardless of how carefully it is washed. The goal is to replace rather than manage, starting with the garments worn most frequently in highest-skin-contact conditions.
The Practical Priority Order
Activewear worn during exercise first. Then base layers worn directly against skin for extended periods. Then outdoor gear with DWR treatments. Then stain-resistant everyday clothing. This is the order in which PFAS exposure from clothing is highest, and therefore the order in which replacement has the most impact.
The regulatory direction is clear: California and New York have already moved to restrict PFAS in most apparel. The market is shifting. The brands leading that shift with independent verification are the ones worth buying from while the rest of the industry catches up.
