Most conversations about microplastics focus on food and water. Those are real exposure sources. But for people who wear synthetic clothing daily, and particularly for people who exercise regularly in synthetic activewear, the wardrobe is a significant and underappreciated contributor to total microplastic exposure.
The good news is that it is also one of the most modifiable. You cannot filter the air in every building you enter. You can choose what touches your skin for eight hours a day.
Start with an Audit of What You Actually Wear Most
Not all garments contribute equally to microplastic exposure. The relevant variables are fiber type, how frequently the garment is worn, how long it stays on during each wear, and the intensity of skin contact and mechanical stress during use.
Activewear ranks highest on all of these dimensions. It is worn in direct skin contact during high-movement activity, washed frequently, and made almost universally from synthetic polymer fibers. A single pair of polyester leggings worn four times a week contributes more to your personal microplastic exposure than a synthetic blouse worn occasionally under a jacket.
Before making any purchases, look at what you actually wear most. That is where changing the fiber type has the most impact.
Prioritize Activewear Over Everything Else
Replacing synthetic activewear with cellulosic alternatives is the single highest-leverage wardrobe change available for microplastic reduction. Napper and Thompson (2016), in Marine Pollution Bulletin, documented consistent and substantial microfiber shedding from synthetic fabrics under mechanical stress. Exercise is the highest-stress use case for any garment. The shedding that occurs during a workout, against skin that is warm and open-pored from exertion, is a more direct exposure pathway than shedding from a synthetic garment hanging in a wardrobe.
TENCEL Lyocell is the most performance-appropriate cellulosic alternative for activewear. It is not cotton, which absorbs moisture and holds it. It is a hydrophilic fiber that draws moisture into its core structure, managing sweat actively during exercise. Kaplan et al. (2014), in Fibers and Polymers, documented TENCEL's thermal comfort and moisture management advantages over synthetic alternatives in active wear settings. The Sempre Leggings are 92% TENCEL Lyocell. Read Fiber Labels Before Buying Anything New
The fiber content label is on every garment by law. Most people never read it. It is the single most informative data point available at the point of purchase for assessing microplastic contribution.
Fibers to minimize: polyester, nylon, acrylic, rayon (bamboo viscose), and spandex in high concentrations. These are all synthetic or chemically processed fibers with microplastic or chemical exposure implications. Fibers with a lower profile: TENCEL Lyocell, certified organic cotton, linen, and wool. Look for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification as independent verification that the finished garment has been tested for harmful substances, including phthalates, PFAS, and formaldehyde.
Wash Synthetic Garments Less Frequently and More Carefully
For synthetic garments you are not yet ready to replace, washing practice matters. Cold water washing reduces fiber degradation and shedding compared to hot water. Shorter wash cycles reduce mechanical agitation. Air drying rather than machine drying avoids the additional mechanical stress of tumble drying, which generates significant additional fiber loss.
A microfiber-catching laundry bag such as a Guppyfriend bag captures a substantial fraction of fibers released during washing. Research from the Plastic Soup Foundation found capture rates above 80% for these bags. This does not address wear-shedding, but it reduces the wash contribution and prevents fibers from entering the water system.
Replace Highest-Wear Synthetic Items First, Not All at Once
A full wardrobe replacement is not the goal and is not practical. The goal is reducing exposure from the garments that contribute most. Prioritize in this order: activewear worn during exercise, then base layers worn directly against skin for extended periods, then outerwear and garments with less direct skin contact.
As synthetic items wear out, replace them with natural or certified cellulosic alternatives rather than like-for-like synthetic replacements. Over time the wardrobe composition shifts without requiring a single large investment.
Be Skeptical of Greenwashed Alternatives
The market for sustainable and natural fiber clothing has grown significantly, and with it the number of brands making claims that do not hold up to scrutiny. Bamboo activewear is almost universally bamboo viscose, a chemically processed rayon that the FTC has taken enforcement action against brands for mislabeling. Recycled polyester is still polyester: it sheds the same plastic microfibers as virgin polyester. Organic cotton is a genuine improvement over conventional cotton for pesticide exposure but does not solve the performance moisture management problem for activewear.
Third-party certification is the only reliable signal. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 on a finished garment means independent testing has occurred. A brand claim without a certifying body behind it is not verifiable. The Texas Attorney General's 2026 investigation into Lululemon demonstrated precisely this: wellness marketing and a restricted substances list are not substitutes for independent verification.
The Realistic Frame
Reducing microplastics in your wardrobe is not about achieving purity. It is about shifting the composition of what touches your skin most, most often, under the highest-exposure conditions. Activewear first. Fiber labels second. Washing practice third. Replace as things wear out, not all at once.
The cumulative effect of those changes over a year is meaningful. The individual steps are not complicated.
