Is Vuori Activewear Safe?

Vuori launched in 2015 and has grown rapidly into a premium lifestyle activewear brand with a strong following among men and women who value a clean aesthetic and active living. The brand has raised significant capital and expanded broadly into retail. With that growth and premium positioning comes a reasonable question from health-conscious buyers: is Vuori actually safe to wear?

The answer requires separating aesthetic wellness positioning from material transparency, which is the same distinction that applies across the premium activewear category.

What Vuori is made of

Vuori's product line is built primarily on synthetic and synthetic-blend fabrics. Its core performance pieces use polyester, nylon, and spandex blends. Some lines incorporate recycled polyester under its sustainability initiatives. The brand has also introduced some natural fiber options in specific product categories.

For the majority of Vuori's catalog, the base fiber composition is synthetic. Synthetic activewear fabrics shed microplastic fibers during washing. Research published in Environmental Science and Technology by Browne et al. (2011) found that synthetic garments release plastic fibers during laundering at scale. A 2024 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine by Marfella et al. found microplastic and nanoplastic particles in cardiovascular tissue samples, with polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride among the identified polymers, representing an escalating body of evidence on microplastic accumulation in human tissue.

Recycled content in some Vuori lines addresses the upstream supply chain question of virgin petroleum use. It does not change the in-use shedding behavior of the fiber. Recycled polyester sheds microplastics during washing at rates comparable to virgin polyester.

What Vuori discloses about chemical finishing

Vuori's publicly available sustainability information focuses on material sourcing commitments, recycled content targets, and packaging. The brand's published materials do not include a comprehensive PFAS policy with independently verified documentation or finished-garment chemical safety certification from a named third-party body as of this writing.

This is not unique to Vuori. The gap between brand-level sustainability communication and finished-garment independent chemical certification is common across the premium activewear category. Most brands communicate sustainability at the supply chain and packaging level rather than at the level of independently verified chemical safety in the finished textile.

The relevance of that gap increased significantly in April 2026 when the Texas Attorney General opened a formal investigation into Lululemon over PFAS in activewear. Lululemon confirmed that PFAS had been used in its durable water repellent treatments through early 2024, while the brand maintained active wellness and sustainability marketing. The investigation established through formal regulatory process that brand positioning and material composition have been two different things at a major premium activewear brand during the recent period.

The DWR question

Durable water repellent treatments are applied to many activewear and performance garments to repel moisture and staining. PFAS compounds have been a standard component of DWR chemistry across the activewear industry. Long-chain PFAS compounds have been phased out under regulatory pressure, but short-chain alternatives remain in use and are under active regulatory review by the US EPA and European chemicals agencies.

DWR treatments are not disclosed on fiber content labels. A garment listing polyester and elastane in its composition may also carry a PFAS-based DWR finish that the label does not mention. Independent finished-garment testing is the only way to verify the absence of these compounds in the final product a consumer wears.

Vuori does not publicly document a PFAS phase-out with independent verification at the finished-garment level. This does not confirm the presence of PFAS in Vuori products. It reflects the absence of independently verified documentation that would allow a confident confirmed-absent claim.

What verified safety looks like in activewear

Two signals are worth applying when evaluating any activewear brand's non-toxic claim. The first is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification on the finished garment. This requires independent laboratory testing of the finished textile for regulated harmful substances including PFAS, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. Certification is issued by an independent body with a certificate number that can be verified. It is the difference between an independently confirmed claim and a brand assertion.

The second is fiber composition that does not require synthetic chemical finishing to perform. TENCEL Lyocell achieves moisture management and breathability through its hygroscopic fiber structure. No DWR treatment is needed, which removes the primary PFAS route from the production process. A 2014 study in Fibers and Polymers by Kaplan et al. confirmed TENCEL Lyocell's moisture management advantage versus cotton under active wear conditions, demonstrating that performance and non-toxic fiber choice are not mutually exclusive.

Bellissima's Sempre Leggings use 92% TENCEL Lyocell and carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification. The non-toxic claim is independently verified at the finished-garment level.

A fair assessment of Vuori

Vuori makes well-constructed activewear with strong design and a premium feel. The brand's growth reflects genuine consumer enthusiasm for its aesthetic and quality. Its recycled content initiatives represent a real supply chain commitment.

On the specific question of chemical safety in the finished garment, Vuori has not published independently verified documentation at the level that would allow a buyer to confirm the absence of PFAS or other synthetic chemical finishes from the products they are wearing. That is the factual state of public information.

For buyers whose purchasing decision rests on confirmed non-toxic composition rather than on aesthetic wellness positioning, that gap is the relevant information. The two things are easy to conflate. They are not the same.
