Nike Activewear PFAS: What the Publicly Available Data Shows

Nike sells more activewear than any other brand on earth. Its scale means that whatever chemical choices it makes in fabric construction and finishing are multiplied across hundreds of millions of garments worn in close contact with skin, globally, every day. That scale makes the PFAS question worth examining carefully.

What Nike Has Said About PFAS

Nike has made public commitments to restrict PFAS in its products as part of its Move to Zero sustainability platform. The brand has stated goals around eliminating certain hazardous chemicals from its supply chain and has published a Restricted Substances List that identifies chemicals it requires suppliers to restrict or eliminate.

A Restricted Substances List is a supplier requirement document. It tells suppliers what Nike will not accept in materials it sources. This is a meaningful supply chain management tool. It is not the same as finished product testing that verifies the outcome of those restrictions at the garment level.

What the Certification Record Shows

Nike products do not uniformly carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification on finished garments. Some Nike products manufactured through bluesign-certified mills carry that certification at the fabric level, which covers chemical management in the manufacturing process. Finished product certification, which tests the completed garment against a defined list of harmful substances, is not a standard feature of Nike's product line.

Nike does publish Higg Index data for some products, which provides a standardized measure of environmental impact across the supply chain. The Higg Index covers manufacturing impact rather than finished product chemical content.

DWR and Performance Finishes at Scale

Nike uses DWR treatments on some of its products, particularly outerwear and weather-resistant performance pieces. The brand has committed to transitioning away from fluorinated DWR to non-fluorinated alternatives as part of its broader PFAS reduction goals. The timeline and scope of that transition across its full product line is not comprehensively documented in publicly available materials.

For core activewear pieces, including training tights, sports bras, and performance tops, DWR is less commonly applied than in outerwear. The more relevant chemical questions for activewear are around moisture-wicking finishes, anti-odor treatments, and fabric softeners applied during manufacturing, which are not always addressed in brand PFAS commitments focused on DWR.

The Scale Problem

Nike's supply chain involves thousands of factories across dozens of countries. Maintaining consistent chemical standards across that supply chain is a genuinely complex operational challenge. Research published in Environmental Science and Technology has documented that chemical finishing consistency varies significantly across manufacturing facilities, even within the same brand's supply chain.

This is relevant because a Restricted Substances List commitment at the brand level does not guarantee uniform implementation across every factory in a supply chain of Nike's scale. The gap between policy and practice is a known challenge in large-scale apparel manufacturing.

What Independent Verification Provides

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification on a finished product provides a specific kind of assurance: an independent laboratory has tested this garment against a defined list of harmful substances and confirmed their absence below set thresholds. That is a product-level outcome, not a policy commitment or a supply chain management framework.

The Sempre Leggings are made from 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex. TENCEL Lyocell is produced by Lenzing AG under OEKO-TEX certification at the fiber level. There are no chemical surface treatments. The performance characteristics come from the physical structure of the fiber itself, not from applied finishing chemistry.

The Honest Assessment

Nike is making genuine progress on chemical transparency relative to where it was a decade ago. The Move to Zero commitments represent real operational change in a supply chain of enormous complexity. The Restricted Substances List is a meaningful supplier management tool.

The gap between Nike's public commitments and independently verified finished product certification is real and worth understanding. If you are buying Nike activewear and want to know whether the specific garment you are purchasing has been independently tested for PFAS and other harmful substances, the publicly available record does not provide that confirmation for most products. You are buying on the strength of the brand's commitments and supply chain management systems, not verified product data.
