What is less common is a clear explanation of what it actually is, where it comes from, and why its properties are different from the materials it is meant to replace.

TENCEL Lyocell is a branded fiber made from wood pulp, produced through a manufacturing process that is significantly cleaner than most textile production. It is soft, breathable, moisture-managing, and durable. It is not a synthetic fiber, and it is not a natural fiber in the same sense that cotton or wool are. What TENCEL actually is
TENCEL is a trademark owned by Lenzing AG, an Austrian fiber company. The trademark covers two distinct fibers: TENCEL Lyocell and TENCEL Modal. They are related but different materials with different production processes and performance profiles.
When people refer to TENCEL in activewear contexts, they are almost always referring to TENCEL Lyocell. That is the fiber this article covers.
TENCEL Lyocell belongs to a fiber category called regenerated cellulose. This means the raw material is plant-based cellulose, typically eucalyptus wood pulp, which is dissolved in a solvent and then extruded through fine openings to create fiber. The resulting material is cellulose-based but manufactured rather than grown directly into fiber form, which is what distinguishes it from natural fibers like cotton.
Where the raw material comes from
The eucalyptus wood pulp used to produce TENCEL Lyocell comes from sustainably managed forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, according to Lenzing's supply chain documentation. Eucalyptus is used specifically because it grows quickly, requires no irrigation beyond rainfall in the regions where it is sourced, and does not require pesticides during cultivation.
This makes the raw material sourcing significantly lower-impact than cotton cultivation, which is one of the most pesticide-intensive agricultural processes globally, or polyester production, which is derived from petroleum.
How the fiber is made: the closed-loop process
The production process is what most distinguishes TENCEL Lyocell from other regenerated cellulose fibers, including rayon and bamboo viscose.
The wood pulp is dissolved in a solvent called NMMO (N-methylmorpholine N-oxide). The dissolved pulp solution is then pushed through spinnerets, fine nozzles that shape how the fiber is made into its final form, and the fibers are solidified in a water bath before being washed, dried, and processed into textile-ready form.
The critical distinction is what happens to the solvent. In conventional rayon and bamboo viscose production, the solvents used, typically including carbon disulfide, are discharged as industrial waste. In Lenzing's TENCEL Lyocell process, the NMMO solvent is captured and reused. Lenzing recovers more than 99% of the solvent in each production cycle, according to the company's published sustainability data. This closed-loop system dramatically reduces the chemical waste output of the production process relative to conventional fiber manufacturing.
The European Chemicals Agency has assessed NMMO as significantly less hazardous than carbon disulfide, the solvent used in conventional viscose and bamboo fabric production.
What the fiber does
The cellulose fiber that emerges from this process has specific physical properties that determine how it behaves in use.
The fiber is hygroscopic, meaning it has an affinity for moisture vapor. Rather than repelling moisture the way synthetic hydrophobic fibers do, TENCEL Lyocell absorbs moisture into the fiber structure and releases it through the fabric. A 2014 study in Fibers and Polymers by Kaplan et al. confirmed that TENCEL Lyocell maintains a measurably drier skin surface than cotton under active wear conditions, a consequence of this hygroscopic behavior.
The fiber surface is naturally smooth at the microscopic level. This smoothness reduces friction against the skin and contributes to the softness the fiber is known for, without requiring chemical softening agents.
The fiber is longer and more uniform than cotton fibers, which gives TENCEL Lyocell fabrics better resistance to pilling under mechanical stress and better structural integrity under repeated washing.
What TENCEL Lyocell is not
It is not a natural fiber in the same sense as cotton or wool. The raw material is natural, but the manufacturing process transforms it into a different material. This distinction matters for transparency.
It is not the same as bamboo fabric. Bamboo viscose is also a regenerated cellulose fiber, but the production process differs significantly: most bamboo fabric is produced using an open-loop process with solvents less rigorously recovered than in TENCEL Lyocell production. The US Federal Trade Commission has taken enforcement action against brands marketing bamboo fabric as natural bamboo, a label that misrepresents the manufactured nature of the fiber.
It is not the same as modal. Modal is another regenerated cellulose fiber, also produced by Lenzing in a TENCEL Modal branded version. The production processes and performance profiles differ, with TENCEL Lyocell outperforming modal in moisture management under exercise conditions.
