If you have ever compared two activewear labels and found one listing spandex and another listing elastane, you may have wondered whether you were looking at different materials. You were not. The same fiber, different names
Spandex and elastane refer to the same synthetic polyurethane fiber with exceptional stretch and recovery properties. The difference between the terms is geographic and regulatory rather than material.
In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission designates this fiber category as spandex under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act, which requires fiber composition labels on all garments sold domestically. Any garment sold in the United States must list this fiber as spandex on its label.
In Europe and most other markets outside the United States, the same fiber is designated as elastane under the European Union's textile labeling regulations. A garment manufactured for European markets will list the fiber as elastane. The same garment manufactured or relabeled for the US market will list it as spandex.
Both terms describe an elastic polyurethane fiber that can be stretched to multiple times its resting length and return to its original dimension. The chemistry, performance properties, and material profile are identical regardless of which term appears on the label.
Where Lycra fits in
Lycra is a brand name owned by Invista, a fiber and textile company. Lycra is Invista's branded version of elastane or spandex, in the same way that TENCEL is Lenzing AG's branded version of lyocell. When a label says Lycra, it means the elastane or spandex fiber was produced by Invista under that specific brand.
Generic spandex or elastane can be produced by any manufacturer meeting the fiber category specifications. Lycra specifically indicates Invista's production. Other branded versions of the same fiber include ROICA from Asahi Kasei and ELASPAN from Invista's previous brand portfolio.
The performance difference between branded and generic versions of this fiber category is real at the high-performance end: Invista publishes specific durability, recovery, and longevity data for Lycra that generic spandex producers do not always match. For premium activewear at higher price points, the branded fiber provenance matters. For everyday activewear, the difference is often not practically significant.
What both terms mean on a label
Whether a label says spandex, elastane, or Lycra, the fiber it refers to is the same synthetic polyurethane stretch fiber. The percentage listed next to the term tells you how much of the garment by weight is this fiber.
For non-toxic activewear assessment purposes, the relevant questions are the same regardless of which term the label uses: what percentage of the garment is this synthetic fiber, what is the primary fiber, and what chemical treatments have been applied to the fabric. A label reading 92% TENCEL Lyocell, 8% Spandex and a label reading 92% TENCEL Lyocell, 8% Elastane are describing the same garment composition. The term difference reflects the market the garment was labeled for.
Why this matters for reading labels
Knowing that spandex and elastane are the same fiber means you can accurately compare garments labeled for different markets, understand that a brand using elastane on its labels is not using a different or lesser material than one using spandex, and focus your assessment on the percentage and the surrounding fiber composition rather than on which term is used.
