What Makes Activewear Non-Toxic

Conventional activewear is made primarily from polyester and nylon, both petroleum-derived synthetic fibers. Research published in Environment International (Hartmann et al., 2019) found that synthetic textiles shed microplastic particles during wear and washing, and that these particles are absorbed through skin contact and inhalation. A separate analysis by Toxic-Free Future (2022) detected PFAS compounds in activewear from multiple major brands, including in fabrics marketed as moisture-wicking or stain-resistant. The term non-toxic in activewear refers specifically to the absence of these substances: synthetic fiber bases, PFAS finishing treatments, and dyes classified as endocrine disruptors under EU REACH regulations.

Why Bellissima Uses TENCEL Lyocell

TENCEL Lyocell is produced by Lenzing AG from sustainably sourced wood pulp using a closed-loop solvent spinning process that recovers and reuses over 99% of the solvent used in production, according to Lenzing AG's published process documentation. The fiber carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification at the fiber level, meaning it has been tested and confirmed free from harmful substances at that stage of production. Bellissima's finished garments use 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex. The finished product does not currently hold its own OEKO-TEX certification. The spandex content, while necessary for stretch and recovery, means microplastic-free and plastic-free claims cannot be made. What can be stated honestly: the fiber base is plant-derived, the fabric has no PFAS treatments, and the construction avoids the synthetic-heavy blends that make up the majority of the activewear market.

What This Collection Is Best For, and Where It Has a Ceiling

Bellissima's non-toxic activewear performs best in low to moderate intensity movement: yoga, pilates, barre, reformer, walking, and recovery training. TENCEL Lyocell has strong moisture management properties for these contexts. At high-intensity sustained output, such as running, HIIT, or hot yoga at elevated temperatures, TENCEL's moisture capacity is tested in ways that synthetic performance fabrics are specifically engineered to handle. This collection is not positioned for those use cases, and stating that clearly is part of what makes the non-toxic positioning honest rather than aspirational.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does non-toxic activewear actually mean?

In the context of this collection, non-toxic refers to the absence of PFAS chemical treatments, petroleum-derived synthetic fiber bases such as polyester and nylon, and dyes classified as endocrine disruptors. It does not mean the garments contain zero chemicals in the literal sense, as all materials are composed of chemical compounds. The distinction is between chemicals of concern identified by regulatory bodies and those that are not.

Is TENCEL Lyocell OEKO-TEX certified?

The TENCEL Lyocell fiber used in Bellissima's collection carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification through Lenzing AG, the fiber manufacturer. This certification applies at the fiber level. Bellissima's finished garments do not currently hold a separate finished-product OEKO-TEX certification. This distinction matters and we state it clearly.

What is the fabric composition?

All four pieces in this collection are made from 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex. The spandex component provides stretch and shape retention. The leggings and shorts are 240 GSM, making them fully opaque and squat-proof.

Are these activewear pieces good for yoga and pilates?

Yes. TENCEL Lyocell's breathability and moisture management are well-suited to the controlled, low-impact movement of yoga and pilates. The 240 GSM weight ensures opacity in inverted positions. These are not recommended for high-intensity or high-heat formats such as hot yoga at 105 degrees Fahrenheit, where the fiber's moisture capacity is exceeded.

How does non-toxic activewear compare to polyester?

Polyester is a petroleum-derived plastic fiber. It sheds microplastic particles during wear and washing, does not biodegrade, and is frequently treated with PFAS-based finishes for moisture management. TENCEL Lyocell is derived from wood pulp, uses a closed-loop production process, and achieves moisture management through the fiber's natural structure rather than chemical treatments. The trade-off is performance ceiling: polyester outperforms TENCEL in sustained high-intensity sweat output. For low to moderate intensity movement, TENCEL is the stronger choice on both health and environmental grounds.

What sizes are available?

All pieces are available in XS through XL. The Sempre Leggings have a 27.5 inch inseam. All pieces launch in black only.
