Is Recycled Polyester Actually Safe? An Honest Assessment

Recycled polyester has become the default sustainability claim in the activewear industry. Major brands have committed to it, and the upstream environmental story is genuine: diverting plastic bottles from landfills and oceans into textile fiber reduces demand for virgin petroleum and addresses a real waste problem.

The safety question is a different question, and it does not get asked as often. For women seeking non toxic activewear rather than just sustainable activewear, the distinction matters. Here is the honest answer.

What recycled polyester is

Recycled polyester, commonly labeled rPET, is produced by breaking down post-consumer PET plastic, typically plastic bottles, into its polymer components and re-extruding them as textile fiber. The resulting material is chemically identical to virgin polyester. It is the same polymer, produced through the same molecular structure, arriving via a different supply chain.

The environmental benefit of recycled polyester is supply chain-specific: it reduces virgin petroleum demand and diverts plastic waste from disposal. The material in the finished garment, the fiber against your skin and the fiber that sheds during washing, is polyester.

Is recycled polyester chemically safe?

The finished rPET fiber in a garment is not inherently more or less chemically safe than virgin polyester fiber. Both are the same stable PET polymer in finished form. Research has not established the finished rPET fiber as a primary health concern in direct contact with skin.

The chemical treatment concern, however, applies equally to recycled polyester as to virgin polyester. PFAS-based water repellency treatments, antimicrobial chemical finishes, and other post-processing treatments are applied to the fabric during manufacturing after the fiber is produced. The recycled origin of the base fiber does not prevent these treatments from being applied, and they are not disclosed on product labels.

Research from the nonprofit MADE SAFE (2022) documented PFAS compounds in activewear products from multiple major brands, including brands that market recycled polyester as a sustainability credential. The PFAS treatments were present in the finished garments regardless of whether the polyester base fiber was virgin or recycled. The US EPA classifies certain PFAS compounds as probable human carcinogens.

For the safety question specifically, the relevant variable is what has been applied to the fabric during manufacturing, not whether the polyester fiber came from a plastic bottle or from virgin petroleum.

The microplastic shedding question

Recycled polyester sheds microplastic fibers during washing at the same rate as virgin polyester. The fiber structure is identical, and the mechanical shedding behavior during laundering is the same.

A study by Napper and Thompson published in Marine Pollution Bulletin (2016) quantified microplastic shedding from different fabric types and established polyester as a significant source. Research published in Nature Food by Landrigan et al. (2021) detected polyethylene terephthalate, the polymer used in PET polyester, in human blood samples. Recycled polyester contributes to this accumulation in the same way virgin polyester does, because the shed particles are chemically identical.

For women whose concern about synthetic activewear includes what enters the environment and potentially the body during use, recycled polyester does not address this concern. It improves the upstream supply chain while leaving the in-use environmental and potential health profile unchanged.

The honest summary of what recycled polyester changes and what it does not

Recycled polyester improves: supply chain environmental impact by reducing virgin petroleum demand and diverting plastic waste from disposal.

Recycled polyester does not improve: the chemical profile of the finished fiber against your skin, the microplastic shedding rate during washing, the likelihood of PFAS or other chemical treatment application during manufacturing, or the fundamental material classification of the fiber as a synthetic petroleum-derived polymer.

These are two separate questions. The sustainability marketing addresses the first. The safety question addresses the second. Conflating them is where most recycled polyester marketing overstates its case.

What actually addresses the safety question

For women concerned about what sits against their skin during exercise and what enters the environment during washing, the most effective approach is primary fiber choice: a garment whose majority fiber is natural or naturally derived rather than synthetic polymer. Is recycled polyester safe? The finished rPET fiber itself is not established as a primary health concern.
