The non-toxic activewear category has a signal-to-noise problem. Brands make claims. Labels use terms like clean, natural, and sustainable without defining them. Certifications exist but are not always present, and when they are absent, it is not always clear whether that absence means anything.
This checklist cuts through that. If you are shopping for toxin-free activewear and want a specific evaluation framework rather than marketing language, work through these items before you buy. The answers will tell you more than the marketing does.
Fiber composition
Check the label. This information is legally required in the United States under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act.
Is the primary fiber natural or naturally derived? TENCEL Lyocell, organic cotton, merino wool, and hemp are examples. These fibers generally require fewer chemical finishing treatments to achieve their performance properties than synthetic alternatives. A primary fiber that is petroleum-derived, nylon, polyester, conventional spandex, is a signal to look more carefully at the remaining checklist items.
Is spandex present, and at what percentage? Spandex is a synthetic polyurethane fiber used for stretch and recovery. In performance activewear, a small percentage is generally necessary to achieve compression and shape retention. Below 15% is typical for TENCEL Lyocell blends. Above 30% is a signal that the primary performance mechanism is synthetic rather than natural fiber-based.
Independent certification
Does the finished garment carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification? This is the most practically useful certification for a non-toxic assessment. It means an accredited independent laboratory has tested the finished fabric for more than 100 harmful substances including formaldehyde, heavy metals, certain azo dyes, pesticide residues, and PFAS compounds. OEKO-TEX publishes a public database at oeko-tex.com where any certification can be verified by certificate number. If no OEKO-TEX certification is present, does the brand offer equivalent independent verification? GOTS certification for organic fiber products, Bluesign approval for mill-level chemical safety, and MADE SAFE certification are alternatives that provide varying levels of independent assessment. Any of these is more informative than an unverified brand claim.
If no independent certification is present at all, proceed with heightened scrutiny on the remaining items.
PFAS treatments
Does the brand explicitly state that the garment does not contain PFAS treatments? PFAS compounds have been used extensively in activewear for water repellency and stain resistance. Research from the nonprofit MADE SAFE (2022) documented PFAS in products from multiple major activewear brands. The US EPA classifies certain PFAS as probable human carcinogens.
A credible PFAS-free claim is specific and supported by testing data or third-party certification rather than general sustainability language. A brand that says its products are sustainable without addressing PFAS specifically has not answered the question.
Antimicrobial treatments
Does the garment claim antimicrobial or odor-resistant properties? If so, what is the mechanism?
Chemical antimicrobial treatments applied to synthetic fabrics include silver-based compounds, which wash out into wastewater during laundering with documented environmental concerns, and certain triclosan derivatives flagged by the US FDA for potential endocrine-disrupting effects in a 2016 final rule on consumer antiseptic products.
A fabric that achieves odor resistance through moisture management, keeping the skin surface dry enough to reduce bacterial growth, does so without added chemical treatment. TENCEL Lyocell's moisture management mechanism works this way. If a brand claims odor resistance through a chemical treatment, ask which compound provides it.
Formaldehyde-based finishes
Does the brand use formaldehyde-based wrinkle-resistant finishes? This is less common in activewear than in dress shirts and casual clothing, but worth checking. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification covers formaldehyde limits in its testing protocol, making that certification a useful shortcut for this item.
Production transparency
Can the brand describe how the primary fiber is manufactured? For TENCEL Lyocell, Lenzing AG publishes specific production data: more than 99% solvent recovery per cycle, FSC-certified eucalyptus raw material sourcing, and ISO 14001 environmental management certification, all documented in its annual sustainability report. For organic cotton, GOTS or OEKO-TEX certification covers the production chain.
A brand that cannot describe the fiber production process beyond the generic category name, saying only that it uses TENCEL or organic cotton without providing provenance, is giving you less information than is available. The information exists. The question is whether the brand chooses to share it.
Care label
Does the care label specify cold water washing and air drying? These are the correct care practices for TENCEL Lyocell and spandex blends specifically, and a brand that specifies them has designed the garment for longevity rather than convenience. A care label that permits hot machine drying is either prioritizing convenience over garment lifespan or using a fiber composition that is more heat-tolerant, typically synthetic, than a natural fiber blend.
The summary checklist
Primary fiber is natural or naturally derived. Spandex percentage is below 15% if present. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification on the finished garment, or equivalent independent verification. Brand can specifically confirm no PFAS treatments with supporting evidence. Antimicrobial claims are explained by a fiber mechanism rather than a chemical compound. No formaldehyde-based finishes. Brand can describe fiber production process with specific data. Care label specifies cold wash and air dry.
