TENCEL, lyocell, and modal show up on labels in the sustainable fashion space often enough that most shoppers assume they understand the relationship between them. Most do not, and the distinction matters when you are making a purchasing decision based on material properties.

The relationship in one sentence
Lyocell and modal are generic fiber categories. TENCEL is a trademark owned by Lenzing AG that covers two specific branded fibers: TENCEL Lyocell and TENCEL Modal. All TENCEL Lyocell is lyocell. All TENCEL Modal is modal. Not all lyocell is TENCEL, and not all modal is TENCEL.
Lyocell: the fiber category
Lyocell is defined by its production process. It is a regenerated cellulose fiber produced by dissolving wood pulp in NMMO (N-methylmorpholine N-oxide) solvent and extruding it into fiber form, with a high rate of solvent recovery. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO 2076) recognizes lyocell as a distinct fiber type based on these production characteristics.
Any manufacturer meeting those production specifications can call the resulting fiber lyocell. The category is defined by process, not by brand or producer. Multiple manufacturers globally produce lyocell with varying raw material sources and production efficiencies.
Key properties of lyocell as a category: hygroscopic moisture management, smooth fiber surface, long fiber length relative to cotton, and tensile strength maintained when wet. A 2014 study in Fibers and Polymers by Kaplan et al. confirmed lyocell's moisture management advantage over cotton under active wear conditions as a consequence of these structural properties.
Modal: the fiber category
Modal is also a regenerated cellulose fiber, also derived from wood pulp, but produced through a different process. Conventional modal production uses sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide as primary solvents, an open-loop process in standard manufacturing. The resulting fiber is known for exceptional softness and a fluid drape.
Modal fibers absorb moisture similarly to cotton: they take it in and hold it rather than transporting it efficiently through the fiber. This moisture retention is manageable in casual wear and low-intensity activity but becomes a limitation during sustained exercise with significant sweat output.
Like lyocell, modal is a generic category. Any manufacturer meeting the production specifications can produce and sell modal fiber.
TENCEL Lyocell: Lenzing's branded lyocell
TENCEL Lyocell is produced by Lenzing AG from sustainably sourced eucalyptus wood pulp through a closed-loop NMMO process that recovers more than 99% of the solvent per production cycle, according to Lenzing's published sustainability data. The fiber carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification and FSC chain-of-custody certification for raw material sourcing.
The TENCEL trademark provides traceability that generic lyocell labels do not. When a label says TENCEL Lyocell, the fiber producer, production process, raw material source, and certification status are all known and documented.
Performance profile: strong moisture management through hygroscopic fiber behavior, natural breathability, smooth surface that reduces skin friction, good pilling resistance from longer fiber length, and wet strength that supports durability under repeated washing.
TENCEL Modal: Lenzing's branded modal
TENCEL Modal is Lenzing's branded modal fiber, produced using a modified process that improves on conventional modal manufacturing's environmental profile. Like TENCEL Lyocell, it carries Lenzing's production credentials and OEKO-TEX certification.
TENCEL Modal is softer than TENCEL Lyocell and has a more fluid drape, properties that make it well-suited for loungewear, casual wear, and low-intensity activewear. Its moisture management under exercise conditions is closer to cotton than to TENCEL Lyocell: it absorbs moisture and tends to hold it rather than transporting it efficiently. For high-output training, this is a meaningful limitation.
Side-by-side comparison for activewear
Moisture management under effort: TENCEL Lyocell outperforms both generic lyocell alternatives and TENCEL Modal in active wear conditions. The hygroscopic transport mechanism keeps the skin surface drier during sustained exercise.
Softness: TENCEL Modal is softer at rest. TENCEL Lyocell is softer than most synthetics and comparable to high-quality cotton. The softness gap between them is more noticeable in casual wear than during exercise.
Durability: TENCEL Lyocell's longer fiber length gives it better pilling resistance under mechanical stress than modal. For activewear used frequently, this translates to sustained surface quality over a longer lifespan.
Production transparency: both TENCEL Lyocell and TENCEL Modal carry Lenzing's documented production credentials. Generic lyocell and generic modal carry no equivalent accountability.
Stretch: neither pure lyocell nor pure modal provides the recovery needed for fitted activewear. Both require a spandex blend to deliver compression and shape retention for performance use.
Which one belongs in activewear
For performance activewear designed for moderate-to-high intensity training, TENCEL Lyocell is the stronger choice on moisture management and durability. For casual activewear, athleisure, and low-intensity use where softness is the priority, TENCEL Modal is a reasonable alternative.
Bellissima's Sempre line uses 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex. The choice of TENCEL Lyocell over TENCEL Modal came down to two factors: moisture management under exercise conditions favors TENCEL Lyocell, and durability under repeated mechanical stress favors TENCEL Lyocell.
