You wash them. They dry. You put them on and within twenty minutes of your next workout, the smell is back. Sometimes it is there before you even start moving.
This is one of the most common complaints about synthetic activewear, and it is almost universally misdiagnosed as a laundry problem. It is not. It is a fiber problem. Why Synthetic Fabric Holds Odor
Polyester and nylon are hydrophobic fibers. They repel water rather than absorbing it. During exercise, sweat is produced at the skin surface, and instead of being drawn into the fiber, it sits on top of it. This creates a warm, moist environment on the fabric surface that is ideal for the bacteria responsible for body odor.
Those bacteria, primarily Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium species, break down sweat compounds into shorter-chain fatty acids and thioalcohols, which are the molecules that produce the characteristic odor of stale workout clothes. Research published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology (Callewaert, C., et al., 2014) compared bacterial colonization of polyester versus cotton garments worn during exercise. Polyester garments retained significantly more odor-causing bacteria after washing than cotton, because bacteria adhere more readily to the hydrophobic surface of synthetic fibers and are not fully removed by standard laundering. The bacteria embed into the fiber structure at a microscopic level. Each subsequent wear adds to that colonization. Over time, the odor becomes permanent regardless of washing frequency or detergent choice.
Why the Problem Gets Worse Over Time
New synthetic leggings typically smell less after washing than older ones. That is because the bacterial colonization of the fiber surface accumulates with each wear cycle. The more times a synthetic garment has been worn and washed, the more established the bacterial community within the fiber structure, and the less effective washing becomes at removing it.
This is also why the smell often returns quickly during the next workout even when the garment smelled clean out of the dryer. The bacteria are not fully gone. They are dormant in the fiber until warmth and moisture reactivate them, which happens within minutes of exercise beginning.
The Fiber Architecture Difference
TENCEL Lyocell behaves in structurally the opposite way. It is a hydrophilic fiber, meaning it absorbs moisture into the fiber's core rather than allowing it to sit on the surface. When sweat is produced during exercise, TENCEL draws it away from the skin and into the fiber structure, where it is distributed and begins to evaporate.

The antibacterial effect of TENCEL is a consequence of its moisture management, not a chemical treatment applied to the fabric surface.
This distinction matters. Some synthetic activewear brands add silver-based antimicrobial treatments or other chemical finishes to combat the odor problem their base fiber creates. Those treatments raise their own questions about long-term skin exposure and environmental impact. TENCEL does not require them because the fiber's structure does not create the same bacterial conditions in the first place.
What Actually Helps (and What Does Not)

Cold water washing preserves fiber integrity and reduces the conditions that set odor-causing bacteria further into the fabric. Air drying rather than machine drying reduces heat that can embed bacteria more deeply. Soaking in white vinegar before washing can temporarily neutralize odor compounds. None of these are permanent solutions because they address the symptom, not the cause.
