Is Bamboo Fabric Actually Natural?

Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on earth. That part is true. What happens to it between the field and your leggings is a different story entirely.

The bamboo fabric category is one of the most misleading in the apparel industry. For women building a non toxic activewear wardrobe, understanding this gap matters. Brands lean on the plant's reputation for fast growth and renewability to sell a fabric that, in almost every case, shares almost nothing with the original plant by the time it reaches a finished garment.

From Plant to Fiber: What the Manufacturing Process Actually Looks Like

Most activewear marketed as bamboo is not made from bamboo in any meaningful structural sense. The bamboo plant is harvested, and its cellulose is extracted through a chemical dissolution process. That dissolved cellulose is then forced through fine spinnerets to create fiber. The resulting material is classified as bamboo viscose or bamboo rayon, not bamboo in its natural form.

The distinction matters because the raw material and the finished fiber are chemically different things. Bamboo the plant has properties worth discussing: it grows quickly, requires no pesticides, and has demonstrated antimicrobial activity in its natural state. Bamboo viscose the fabric has almost none of those properties intact by the time chemical processing is complete.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has been explicit about this. In a 2021 enforcement action, the FTC took action against multiple major retailers for marketing products as bamboo fabric when the material was, in fact, rayon made from bamboo. The FTC's position is clear: if the manufacturing process chemically transforms the plant material, the end product must be labeled as rayon or viscose, not bamboo. Several brands paid civil penalties as a result.

So when you see bamboo activewear on a website without a rayon or viscose qualifier, you are almost certainly looking at a marketing claim that the FTC itself has found misleading.

The Chemical Processing Problem

Bamboo viscose is produced using a process similar to conventional rayon manufacturing. This involves dissolving bamboo pulp in sodium hydroxide and then carbon disulfide to create a viscous solution that can be extruded into fiber, followed by an acid bath to solidify the strands.

Carbon disulfide is not an incidental ingredient. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has documented its links to neurological damage, cardiovascular disease, and reproductive harm in workers with chronic occupational exposure. The EPA classifies it as a hazardous air pollutant. Most bamboo viscose production occurs in countries with limited worker safety enforcement, which makes occupational exposure a real concern in the supply chain.

The environmental footprint is also more complicated than bamboo's plant reputation suggests. The chemicals used in viscose manufacturing are not always recovered or safely disposed of. Open-loop processing, where solvents are released rather than captured, contributes to water and air contamination at production sites. The sustainability story bamboo brands tell is mostly about the plant. The story of what happens in the factory is rarely told.

The finished fabric also retains very little of bamboo's original plant chemistry. Research published in Fibers (Shen, L., et al., 2010) found that the antibacterial and moisture management properties associated with bamboo in its natural state are largely absent in bamboo viscose, because the processing strips out the compounds responsible for those properties.

What Bamboo Viscose Actually Performs Like in Activewear

In practice, bamboo viscose behaves like other rayon fabrics. It is soft to the touch, has a pleasant drape, and provides some moisture absorption. For casual wear, those qualities hold up reasonably well.

For activewear, the durability picture is less flattering. Rayon-type fibers weaken when wet. Repeated high-intensity movement, combined with moisture from sweat, degrades the fiber structure over time faster than fibers with stronger polymer architecture. Pilling, shape loss, and reduced stretch recovery after repeated washing are common complaints in bamboo activewear reviews, for reasons rooted directly in the fiber's chemistry.

For a premium-priced garment that is expected to perform through years of use, durability is not a secondary consideration. The One Exception: Bamboo Linen

There is a version of bamboo fabric that is mechanically processed rather than chemically processed. Bamboo linen, sometimes called bamboo bast fiber, is produced by mechanically crushing the bamboo stalk and retting the fiber rather than dissolving it in chemicals. The result is a fabric that is genuinely closer to a natural, minimally processed fiber.

Bamboo linen is extremely rare in activewear because it is coarser, stiffer, and does not stretch. It is incompatible with the soft, four-way-stretch feel that activewear buyers expect. If a brand is selling soft, stretchy bamboo activewear, it is bamboo viscose, not bamboo linen. The two are not interchangeable, and the softer one is the one with the more complicated manufacturing story.

How to Read Bamboo Claims on a Label

Under FTC rules, a fabric legally labeled as bamboo must be composed of unprocessed bamboo fiber, which is effectively never what activewear contains. Anything produced through chemical dissolution must be labeled as rayon, viscose, or lyocell, with the source plant listed as a modifier.

Labels that say made from bamboo without calling the fiber rayon or viscose are making a claim the FTC has already found problematic. Labels that say 100% bamboo on a soft, stretchy fabric are almost certainly inaccurate. What to look for instead is the fiber name itself: rayon, viscose, lyocell. Then look for third-party certification, such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100 or the EU Ecolabel, which verifies that the finished fabric has been tested for harmful substances regardless of what the raw material was.

A Better Standard Exists

TENCEL Lyocell is also produced from plant cellulose, specifically from sustainably harvested wood pulp. But the manufacturing process is categorically different. Lenzing AG, the producer of TENCEL, uses a closed-loop solvent system in which the solvent, NMMO, is non-toxic and recovered and reused at a rate of over 99%, according to Lenzing's published production documentation. The environmental footprint of the closed-loop process is significantly lower than open-loop viscose manufacturing.

Unlike bamboo viscose, TENCEL Lyocell retains its functional properties through manufacturing. The fiber is microscopically smooth, hydrophilic at a structural level, and naturally resistant to bacterial growth. Kaplan et al. (2014), writing in Fibers and Polymers, documented TENCEL's superior moisture management and thermal comfort performance compared to synthetic and other cellulosic fibers in active wear applications. Those properties are not claimed from the plant. They are properties of the finished fiber. The Plant Is Not the Fabric

The appeal of bamboo as a raw material is real. It grows fast, sequesters carbon, and requires no pesticides. None of that translates automatically into the fabric in your leggings.

The question worth asking is not what a fabric started as. It is what it became, how it got there, and whether anyone with independent authority has verified the finished product is what the brand says it is. On those three questions, bamboo activewear rarely gives a satisfying answer.
