What to Wear for Breathwork Class: A Practical Guide

Breathwork is a practice of internal focus. Whether the format is Holotropic, Wim Hof method, pranayama, or any of the functional breathing practices that have become part of the broader wellness landscape, the common element is that the practitioner's attention is directed entirely inward. The breath is the object of practice. The body is the instrument. And the clothing needs to be completely absent from awareness for the practice to work as intended. Choosing non-toxic athletic wear for breathwork is specifically about eliminating chemical sensations against skin during a practice that heightens interoceptive awareness.

That is a higher standard than most activewear is designed to meet. Most activewear is designed to perform during external physical effort. Breathwork asks the clothing to perform in a different way: by not performing at all. By simply not existing in the practitioner's awareness during a 60 to 90 minute session of internal focus.

What Breathwork Specifically Needs from Clothing

Unrestricted diaphragmatic breathing is the first requirement. Breathwork relies on the full movement of the diaphragm, which means anything that restricts the abdomen, including tight waistbands, maximum compression fabrics, or clothing that creates focal pressure against the belly, interrupts the practice at its most fundamental level. The clothing needs to move with the breath rather than against it.

No physical focal points is the second requirement. Breathwork sessions involve sustained stillness in supine or seated positions where the absence of distraction is the enabling condition for the practice. A seam that presses against the lower back during a supine breathwork session, a waistband edge that digs during a seated pranayama practice, or a fabric texture that creates an awareness of the clothing against skin are all focal points that compete with the breath as the object of attention. The guide on what to wear for meditation covers the same stillness-first fabric principles for seated practice.

Temperature comfort across changing states is the third requirement. Breathwork can produce significant physiological changes including altered body temperature. Some practices, particularly those involving hyperventilation patterns, can produce rapid changes in thermal experience. Fabric that adjusts gently to body temperature changes rather than holding heat against the skin or creating a cooling sensation supports the physiological journey of the practice.

What to Wear

The Bellissima Sempre Leggings are made from 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex. TENCEL Lyocell is produced by Lenzing AG with OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification at the fiber level. The finished Sempre garment does not yet hold its own OEKO-TEX certification. The self-fabric high-waisted waistband distributes gentle even pressure across the abdomen without the focal constriction that would interrupt diaphragmatic breathing. The diamond crotch gusset allows full hip and pelvic floor release for diaphragmatic breath patterns. No front rise seam. Laser cut hem without folded seam edge. Supportive fit without restriction. The microscopically smooth fiber surface keeps texture awareness against skin low during sustained stillness. Sizes XS to XL. Designed in the USA. Available at livebellissima.com/products/non-toxic-leggings.

TENCEL Lyocell's hygroscopic moisture management maintains thermal neutrality during breathwork by absorbing ambient moisture without surface accumulation, which prevents the thermal sensation changes that can make fabric awareness spike during the physiological changes that breathwork produces. The fiber-level OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification matters in a practice that specifically cultivates sensory awareness and interoception. The post on whether TENCEL is breathable covers the airflow and moisture properties relevant to extended still practice.

For the top, the Sempre Twist Bra's straight bottom hemline and double-layer construction sits cleanly across the torso during supine breathwork without riding up or creating fold lines against the back on the floor. The same 92% TENCEL Lyocell composition. Removable EVA foam pads. Available at livebellissima.com/products/non-toxic-sports-bra.

Bring a blanket. Breathwork often produces cooling as the practice deepens, and having a layer to pull over the body during the integration phase at the end of the session maintains the comfort that allows the integration to complete without interruption.

What to Avoid at Breathwork

Avoid maximum compression waistbands that restrict the full abdominal expansion of diaphragmatic breathing. Avoid jeans, structured clothing, or any garments with hardware that creates pressure points during supine stillness. Avoid rough textures or prominent seams that create physical focal points. Avoid synthetic fabrics with applied finishing chemistry in a practice where chemical sensations against skin can become perceptible during heightened interoceptive awareness. And avoid anything that makes you think about what you are wearing at any point during the session.

The ideal breathwork clothing is clothing that, once put on, disappears. TENCEL Lyocell is well suited to that standard. For the related sound bath context, the guide to what to wear for a sound bath covers the same disappearing fabric principles for a lying practice. The benefits of TENCEL for activewear explains why the fiber is suited to both active and still practice contexts.
