What Ethical Means in Bellissima's Context
Ethical is a word that gets applied to activewear without much specificity. Bellissima uses it with precision. The primary fiber is TENCEL Lyocell, produced by Lenzing AG using wood pulp sourced from forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). These certifications require independent auditing of harvesting practices, biodiversity protection, and the rights of forest-dependent communities. The production process is a closed-loop system that recaptures over 99% of the solvent used to dissolve wood pulp into fiber, significantly reducing the chemical discharge associated with conventional viscose rayon production (Lenzing AG, 2023). The fiber carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which verifies the absence of more than 100 harmful substances at the fiber level. Bellissima states clearly that it does not yet hold finished-product OEKO-TEX certification. That distinction matters, and naming it is part of what ethical means here.
Honest Sourcing, Stated Plainly
Bellissima is a pre-launch brand building toward certification at the finished-product level. The fiber-level credentials are real and independently verified. The brand's position is that transparency about where credentials exist, and where they do not yet exist, is the baseline for being taken seriously as an ethical activewear brand. The 8% spandex in every garment is synthetic. Spandex is not biodegradable, cannot be described as natural, and the finished garment sheds some synthetic fibers during washing. These facts are stated here rather than buried. The TENCEL Lyocell component is biodegradable under controlled conditions per ISO 14855 and ISO 20200 (Lenzing AG, 2023). The blend as a whole is not. Bellissima's ethical activewear collection is for buyers who want substantiated claims over marketing language.
Activity Range and Performance Ceiling
Bellissima's ethical activewear collection is best suited to yoga, pilates, barre, reformer, walking, and low-impact training. TENCEL Lyocell performs well at moderate output levels, managing moisture comfortably during studio-based practice. For sustained high-intensity activity such as running, HIIT, or Bikram yoga at 105 degrees Fahrenheit, a wicking synthetic fabric handles peak sweat load more effectively. Bellissima does not claim otherwise. Sizes XS to XL, all pieces available in black. Every piece includes all four products in the Sempre collection: leggings, shorts, Twist Bra, and Halter Bra.
What makes activewear ethical?
Ethical activewear involves transparent sourcing, responsible fiber production, and honest communication about what a garment contains and what certifications it holds. Bellissima uses TENCEL Lyocell from FSC or PEFC certified forests, produced in a closed-loop system by Lenzing AG. The fiber is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. The finished product does not yet hold OEKO-TEX certification at the garment level.
Is Bellissima activewear ethically made?
The fiber sourcing and production process meet the criteria that matter most for ethical activewear: certified forest origin, closed-loop manufacturing, and OEKO-TEX fiber-level certification. Bellissima states clearly what is and is not certified at the finished-product level, rather than making unsubstantiated claims.
Does Bellissima hold any certifications?
The TENCEL Lyocell fiber holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification through Lenzing AG at the fiber level, verifying the absence of over 100 harmful substances. Bellissima does not currently hold finished-product OEKO-TEX certification.
Is ethical activewear better for sensitive skin?
TENCEL Lyocell has a smooth fiber surface and absorbs moisture into the fiber rather than leaving it on the skin, which reduces the irritation associated with synthetic fabrics during extended wear. The fiber-level OEKO-TEX certification confirms the absence of substances known to cause skin reactions.
What activities is ethical activewear suited for?
Yoga, pilates, barre, reformer, walking, and low-impact training. Not optimized for sustained high-intensity activity such as running or HIIT.
