PFAS-Free Activewear

Bellissima's PFAS-free activewear collection is made with 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex, a composition that contains no added PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). TENCEL Lyocell fiber holds fiber-level OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification through Lenzing AG, independently tested against a broad range of chemical substances of concern. Every piece is designed for yoga, pilates, barre, and low-impact training.

What Makes This Activewear PFAS-Free

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a class of synthetic fluorinated chemicals widely used in conventional activewear for water repellency, stain resistance, and moisture management. Research published in Environmental Science and Technology (Lunderberg et al., 2020) identified PFAS compounds in the surface treatments and fiber coatings of multiple athletic apparel categories. Bellissima's Sempre collection uses 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex, a composition that does not rely on fluorochemical surface treatments to achieve its moisture management properties. TENCEL Lyocell manages moisture through its inherent fiber structure, specifically its nanoscale fibrils and high surface area, not through chemical coatings applied after manufacturing.

Activity Fit for PFAS-Free Activewear

The Sempre collection suits yoga, pilates, barre, reformer pilates, and walking. TENCEL Lyocell absorbs moisture into its fiber structure rather than repelling it, which keeps fabric from becoming clammy against the skin during steady-state movement and lower-intensity sessions. The 8% spandex content provides the recovery and range of motion required for floor-based and reformer pilates work. The high-waisted V-back legging design and diamond crotch gusset support full hip flexion and extension without restriction. All four pieces in the Sempre collection are included in this category and cover leggings, shorts, and two bra styles suited to low and moderate activity intensity.

Honest Limitations and Certification Disclosure

Bellissima's PFAS-free positioning reflects the fiber composition and the absence of fluorochemical treatments in the production process. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification held by Lenzing AG applies to the TENCEL Lyocell fiber at the raw material stage, not to the finished Sempre garment. Bellissima does not currently hold finished-product OEKO-TEX certification. For high-intensity output, sustained heat, or extended sweat sessions, TENCEL Lyocell reaches a moisture absorption ceiling that synthetic moisture-wicking fabrics do not. Activities such as running, HIIT, hot yoga, and spin are outside the honest performance ceiling of this collection.

What is PFAS and why does it matter for activewear?

PFAS are per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a group of over 12,000 synthetic fluorinated chemicals used across consumer products for their water and oil repellency. In activewear, PFAS appear most often in DWR (durable water repellent) coatings and stain-resistant surface treatments. Research has linked chronic PFAS exposure to disruptions in thyroid function, immune response, and hormonal regulation (Steenland et al., 2010, Environmental Health Perspectives). California's AB 1817, effective 2025, prohibits the use of PFAS in textiles sold in the state. The Sempre collection avoids these concerns through fiber selection rather than surface chemistry.

Is Bellissima activewear certified PFAS-free?

Bellissima does not hold a standalone PFAS-free certification at the finished garment level. The TENCEL Lyocell fiber used in the Sempre collection is produced by Lenzing AG, which holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification for the fiber. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests against a list of harmful substances including several PFAS compounds. The finished Bellissima garment is not independently OEKO-TEX certified. Bellissima's PFAS-free positioning is based on the composition of the fiber and the absence of fluorochemical treatments in production, not a third-party finished-product certificate.

What activities is this activewear best suited for?

The Sempre collection is best suited to yoga, pilates, barre, reformer pilates, walking, and recovery movement. TENCEL Lyocell performs well at low to moderate sweat output and provides genuine comfort benefits for floor work, stretching, and mat-based training. For high-sweat or high-impact activities, the fiber reaches a moisture saturation point that synthetic fabrics handle differently. Bellissima states this directly rather than overclaiming.

Does TENCEL Lyocell shed PFAS into skin or wash water?

TENCEL Lyocell is a cellulosic fiber derived from wood pulp. It does not contain fluorine atoms in its molecular structure and does not rely on fluorochemical surface treatments. There is no known PFAS shedding mechanism associated with lyocell fibers. The concern about PFAS migration from activewear is specifically associated with DWR-treated synthetic fabrics and PFAS-containing fiber coatings, neither of which apply to the Sempre collection's composition.

How does PFAS-free activewear compare to conventional polyester workout clothes?

Conventional polyester and nylon activewear often relies on PFAS-containing DWR coatings for moisture management and quick-dry performance. These coatings degrade with washing, releasing fluorochemical compounds into wash water and potentially into the wearer's skin. TENCEL Lyocell achieves moisture management through fiber structure, not surface chemistry. The trade-off is moisture absorption capacity: TENCEL absorbs more before feeling saturated, while treated polyester repels moisture to the surface. For low to moderate intensity, the TENCEL approach is the more skin-contact-appropriate choice.
