Does Lululemon Contain PFAS in 2026?

Lululemon confirmed in April 2026 that PFAS had been used in its durable water repellent products before a phase-out completed in early 2024. The confirmation came in response to a Civil Investigative Demand issued by the Texas Attorney General, who opened a formal investigation into whether Lululemon misled consumers about the chemical composition of its activewear.

For buyers who want to understand the specifics, the investigation surfaces a chemistry question that the activewear industry has largely avoided making legible to consumers. Here is what PFAS actually are, how they end up in workout clothes, what the Lululemon investigation found, and what it means in practice. What PFAS are

PFAS is an acronym for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. The class encompasses several thousand distinct chemical compounds, all sharing a carbon-fluorine bond that makes them exceptionally stable. That stability is why they do not break down in the environment, in water, or in living tissue. The informal name, forever chemicals, is chemically accurate.

The US Environmental Protection Agency's 2024 assessment of PFAS health effects documents links to thyroid hormone disruption, immune suppression, elevated cholesterol, and increased risk of certain cancers in peer-reviewed research. The EPA's current health advisories for PFAS in drinking water reflect a scientific consensus that meaningful exposure at relatively low concentrations carries health implications.

How PFAS end up in activewear

The primary route in activewear is durable water repellent (DWR) treatments. DWR is a finish applied to the outer surface of a fabric after weaving or knitting to cause water to bead and roll off rather than soaking in. It is distinct from the fiber content of the garment. A fabric that lists 87% nylon and 13% elastane on its label may also have a DWR finish that contains PFAS chemistry. That finish is not disclosed in the fiber content label.

Long-chain PFAS compounds, specifically PFOA and PFOS, were the original DWR chemistry of choice across the outdoor and activewear industry. Both have been phased out under regulatory pressure, with PFOA banned by the US EPA and PFOS listed under the Stockholm Convention. The industry shifted to short-chain PFAS alternatives, which were marketed as safer. Subsequent research has raised questions about the long-chain versus short-chain distinction, and several short-chain compounds are now under active regulatory review.

PFAS can also enter garments through other routes: dyes, printing inks, stain repellents, and even water used in manufacturing in regions with PFAS-contaminated water supplies. The DWR application is the most direct and intentional route, but it is not the only one. What the Texas investigation found

The Texas Attorney General's Civil Investigative Demand, dated April 13, 2026, sought documents from Lululemon related to its use of PFAS in activewear products and its public sustainability representations. The investigation focused specifically on whether those representations were materially misleading to consumers.

Lululemon's response confirmed that PFAS had been used in DWR treatments in some products prior to a phase-out completed in early 2024. A parallel class action lawsuit filed in California alleged that consumers made purchasing decisions based on sustainability marketing that did not accurately reflect the presence of PFAS chemistry in the products they bought.

The investigation remains open as of the date of this post. No regulatory findings or judicial conclusions have been issued. What is established is the confirmation of PFAS use through early 2024 and the formal regulatory examination of whether the brand's public representations were consistent with that use. What the phase-out means for buyers

Lululemon's stated phase-out of PFAS DWR treatments was completed in early 2024. Products manufactured after that transition should not contain intentionally applied PFAS DWR chemistry, assuming the phase-out was comprehensive and supply chain verification is in place.

There are two practical limitations to that assumption. First, retail inventory moves slowly. Products manufactured before the phase-out may remain in stores or in consumers' closets for years. There is no reliable way for a buyer to determine when a specific garment was manufactured from the label alone. Second, intentional PFAS application in DWR is one route of exposure. Other routes through dyes, processing chemicals, and water contamination in the supply chain are not addressed by a DWR phase-out alone.

The gap between a brand commitment and a verified, independently certified claim is the practical problem the Lululemon case makes concrete. A commitment to phase out PFAS DWR is different from a certified PFAS-free finished garment verified by an independent third-party lab. What verified non-toxic looks like

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification tests the finished garment for harmful substances including PFAS compounds, heavy metals, formaldehyde, phthalates, and other regulated chemicals. It is issued by an independent certifying body, not by the brand, and requires periodic re-testing. When a garment carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, the absence of regulated harmful substances has been independently verified in the finished textile, not just claimed by the manufacturer.

Fiber composition also matters independently of finishing chemistry. TENCEL Lyocell, produced by Lenzing AG through a closed-loop process, achieves its moisture management and breathability through fiber structure rather than through chemical finishing. It does not require DWR treatment to perform in active wear contexts, which removes the primary PFAS exposure route from the production process.
