How TENCEL Lyocell Manages Heat and Moisture
Breathability in fabric is not a single property. It involves how quickly heat dissipates from the skin surface, how moisture is absorbed or transported, and how the fabric feels against skin that has been in motion. Polyester manages peak sweat volume by pulling moisture to the outer surface where it evaporates, but the fiber itself does not breathe. It traps radiant body heat because it has no moisture absorption capacity of its own. TENCEL Lyocell works differently. Its fiber structure has a high absorption capacity relative to its weight, drawing moisture into the fiber and moderating the skin surface temperature in the process. Research comparing natural cellulosic and synthetic knit fabrics found that TENCEL performed well on both moisture content at the skin interface and thermal comfort during moderate-output activity (Öner et al., 2013). Bellissima uses 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex across all garments in the collection.
Best Suited Activities for Breathable Performance
Bellissima's breathable activewear performs best in yoga, pilates, barre, reformer, walking, and recovery training. These are activities where heat builds gradually and the body needs consistent temperature regulation rather than rapid sweat evacuation. The fabric is fully opaque without adding the thermal mass of a heavier knit. The interlock weft knit structure allows air movement through the fabric during low-compression, dynamic movements common in yoga and pilates. The diamond crotch gusset on leggings and shorts removes the seam friction at the inner crotch, which is a heat and irritation source during floor and mat-based practice. The bras in this collection, both the Sempre Twist Bra and Sempre Halter Bra, use the same TENCEL blend at the skin surface, maintaining consistent breathability across the full outfit.
The Honest Ceiling for Breathable Claims
Breathable is one of the most overused claims in activewear marketing. Bellissima applies it with a specific ceiling. At sustained maximum intensity such as running at pace, Bikram yoga at 105 degrees Fahrenheit, or HIIT circuits, sweat volume exceeds what cellulosic fibers absorb efficiently. At that output level, a wicking synthetic fabric moves moisture away from the skin more rapidly. TENCEL's strength is in the moderate, steady exertion range where most people spend most of their workout time. For that range, the breathable performance is genuine and the skin-feel is meaningfully better than polyester. The TENCEL Lyocell fiber holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification through Lenzing AG at the fiber level. Bellissima does not currently hold finished-product OEKO-TEX certification.

Polyester pulls moisture across the surface for rapid evaporation but does not absorb, which can leave skin feeling hot between sweat events. For moderate-intensity activity, TENCEL provides a more comfortable skin experience. For maximum-intensity sustained output, polyester wicks faster.

Is breathable activewear good for hot yoga?
For yoga at standard studio temperatures, yes. For Bikram-style hot yoga at 105 degrees Fahrenheit with sustained exertion, TENCEL Lyocell absorbs moisture rather than wicking it, which can feel heavy at that output level. Standard heated yoga and warm yoga formats are within the honest performance ceiling.
