Chemical-Free Activewear

Bellissima's activewear collection, built for those seeking to avoid the chemicals of concern in conventional synthetic activewear, is made from 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex. The TENCEL Lyocell fiber is produced without PFAS, BPA, phthalates, or heavy metal dyes, and holds fiber-level OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification through Lenzing AG. "Chemical-free" is used here to mean free from the specific chemical categories that research has associated with health concerns in activewear, not as an absolute scientific claim.

What "Chemical-Free" Actually Means Here

Nothing is technically chemical-free. Every material, including water, is composed of chemicals. When this term is used in the context of activewear, it refers specifically to freedom from the categories of synthetic chemicals that research has linked to health concerns in close-contact textiles: PFAS, BPA, phthalates, formaldehyde, heavy metal dyes, and azo compounds that can release carcinogenic amines. Bellissima uses the phrase to mean free from the chemicals of concern in conventional activewear, not as an absolute scientific claim. The Sempre collection is made from 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex. TENCEL Lyocell is a plant-derived cellulosic fiber produced through a closed-loop solvent process (Lenzing AG's REFIBRA or standard lyocell process) that does not involve PFAS, BPA, or phthalate plasticizers. The TENCEL fiber holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification through Lenzing AG, which independently tests the fiber against over 100 restricted substances, including all major categories of concern listed above.

Activity Fit for This Collection

The Sempre collection is designed for yoga, pilates, barre, reformer pilates, and walking. The full range of four pieces, leggings, shorts, halter bra, and twist bra, is included here because all four share the same 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex composition and the same production and certification profile. TENCEL Lyocell handles the moisture output of low to moderate intensity training without becoming clammy against the skin. At these intensities, the fiber's moisture absorption capacity is not exceeded. The leggings and shorts are squat proof and fully opaque. The bra styles suit studio training with removable EVA foam padding and supportive construction appropriate for the activity ceiling.

Honest Limitations and What This Is Not

Bellissima does not claim the Sempre collection is free of all chemicals in the absolute sense. The term applies to the specific categories of synthetic chemicals of concern documented in activewear research. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification covers the TENCEL Lyocell fiber through Lenzing AG, not the finished Bellissima garment. Finished-product OEKO-TEX certification has not been obtained. The 8% spandex component is a synthetic elastomer and is not certified independently. Bellissima does not make greenwashing absolute claims. For high-intensity training, HIIT, running, spin, or hot yoga, the TENCEL moisture management ceiling is reached. These activities are outside the honest performance scope of this collection.

What chemicals are typically found in conventional activewear?

Research and regulatory action have identified several categories of concern: PFAS used in water-repellent and stain-resistant treatments (Lunderberg et al., 2020); phthalates in printed graphics and heat transfer labels; formaldehyde in wrinkle-resistant finishes; azo dyes that can release carcinogenic amines; and heavy metals in certain synthetic dye processes. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 restricted substances list addresses all of these categories. TENCEL Lyocell is a cellulosic fiber that does not require the surface chemistry or synthetic polymer processing steps that introduce most of these compounds into conventional activewear.

Is the finished Bellissima garment OEKO-TEX certified?

No. The TENCEL Lyocell fiber used in the Sempre collection holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification through Lenzing AG at the fiber level. The finished Bellissima garment does not currently hold its own independent OEKO-TEX finished-product certification. Bellissima states this distinction explicitly rather than allowing any ambiguity about the certification scope.

What activities are these pieces best for?

Yoga, pilates, barre, reformer pilates, walking, and recovery movement. Bellissima does not position the Sempre collection for running, HIIT, hot yoga, CrossFit, or spin. The honest ceiling of TENCEL Lyocell moisture management is below the output requirements of sustained high-intensity training.

Does TENCEL Lyocell contain synthetic chemicals?

TENCEL Lyocell is a regenerated cellulosic fiber made from wood pulp. The solvent used in production (N-methylmorpholine N-oxide, or NMMO) is recovered and recycled in a closed-loop system at a rate reported by Lenzing AG at over 99%. The fiber itself does not contain residual solvent at functional levels. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 testing independently verifies the absence of restricted substances in the fiber, including formaldehyde, heavy metals, and phthalates.
