What Lyocell Is and Why It Works for Activewear

Lyocell is a regenerated cellulosic fiber derived from wood pulp, processed through a closed-loop solvent spinning method that recovers and recycles the production solvent at over 99% efficiency (Lenzing AG). TENCEL is Lenzing AG's registered brand of lyocell and is the fiber used across Bellissima's Sempre collection. Unlike conventional rayon or viscose, which use open-loop wet-spinning chemistry, lyocell production captures the solvent in a continuous cycle, producing a fiber with a distinct structural profile. TENCEL Lyocell fibers have a highly oriented crystalline structure and a fibrillar surface morphology that distinguishes them from other regenerated cellulosics. This structure is directly responsible for the moisture management properties that make TENCEL Lyocell relevant for activewear. The fiber absorbs moisture into its interior, into the fibrils themselves, rather than holding it at the surface. The result is a drier microclimate against skin during low to moderate sweat output. The Sempre collection is 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex across all four pieces: leggings, shorts, halter bra, and twist bra.

Activity Fit for Lyocell Activewear

The Sempre collection is designed for yoga, pilates, barre, reformer pilates, and walking. TENCEL Lyocell's moisture absorption mechanism performs at its best in the sweat output range produced by these activities. The fiber draws moisture away from skin contact before it accumulates at the surface, maintaining comfort through full sessions at these intensities. The leggings and shorts are squat proof and fully opaque in all positions. The high-waisted V-back waistband sits firmly without rolling during forward folds, inversions, or reformer carriage movements. The diamond crotch gusset in both the leggings and shorts accommodates the hip range of motion required for deep pilates and yoga positions without seam restriction. Both bra styles include removable EVA foam pads and suit the support requirements of studio-based training at low to moderate intensity.

Honest Limitations and Certification Disclosure

TENCEL Lyocell has a moisture absorption ceiling. At high sweat output, the fiber saturates and the comfort advantage over synthetic fabrics diminishes. For running, HIIT, hot yoga, spin, or sustained high-sweat training, synthetic moisture-wicking fabrics have a technical performance edge. Bellissima does not position the Sempre collection as appropriate for those activities. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification applies to the TENCEL Lyocell fiber through Lenzing AG at the raw material level, not to the finished Sempre garment. Bellissima does not currently hold finished-product OEKO-TEX certification.

What is TENCEL Lyocell?

TENCEL is the registered brand name for lyocell fiber produced by Lenzing AG, an Austrian fiber manufacturer. Lyocell is classified as a regenerated cellulosic fiber under the EU textile labeling regulation and the US FTC Textile Fiber Products Identification Act. The raw material is wood pulp, predominantly from eucalyptus, beech, and other FSC or PEFC certified sources. The production solvent (NMMO) is non-toxic and recovered in a closed loop. The resulting fiber is biodegradable under industrial composting conditions. TENCEL Lyocell is not the same as rayon, viscose, or modal, though all four are regenerated cellulosics.

How does lyocell compare to synthetic activewear fibers?

Polyester and nylon are petroleum-derived synthetic polymers. They manage moisture by wicking it to the fabric surface for evaporation, which is effective at high sweat rates but can create surface dampness at lower activity levels. TENCEL Lyocell absorbs moisture into the fiber, which reduces surface dampness at low to moderate sweat output but reaches saturation faster than synthetic wicking fabrics at high output. Lyocell is biodegradable under industrial conditions; polyester and nylon are not. Lyocell does not produce synthetic microplastics; it sheds cellulosic fibrils that biodegrade.

Is lyocell activewear good for sensitive skin?

Yes, within the documented evidence base. Research published in the British Journal of Dermatology (Lübbe et al., 2016) found lyocell fabric reduced skin irritation scores in patients with atopic dermatitis compared to cotton and synthetic alternatives. The smooth fiber surface morphology reduces mechanical friction against sensitized skin. TENCEL Lyocell is also produced without PFAS, phthalates, or BPA, making the fiber appropriate for the skin-contact requirements of close-fitting activewear.

What is the fabric composition of the Sempre collection?

92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex across all four pieces. The spandex content provides the stretch and recovery required for fitted activewear without compromising the comfort and moisture properties of the lyocell fiber. TENCEL Lyocell holds fiber-level OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification through Lenzing AG. The finished Bellissima garment does not hold independent finished-product OEKO-TEX certification.
