Sensitive Skin Activewear

Bellissima's sensitive skin activewear collection is made with 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex. TENCEL Lyocell has clinical recognition for reduced irritation against sensitive and atopic skin, with a smooth fiber surface that does not generate the friction or static associated with synthetic activewear. Designed for yoga, pilates, barre, and low-impact training. Sizes XS to XL, black.

Sensitive Skin Activewear Made with TENCEL Lyocell

Why Synthetic Activewear Irritates Sensitive Skin

Synthetic activewear fabrics, primarily polyester and nylon, irritate sensitive skin through three distinct mechanisms. First, the fiber surface is microscopically rougher than natural cellulosic fibers, generating friction against skin during repetitive movement. Second, synthetic fabrics are hydrophobic: they do not absorb moisture, instead pulling it across the surface, which leaves a film of sweat and dissolved body chemicals in contact with skin throughout a session. Third, synthetic fibers generate static electricity during movement, which increases the cling and friction against skin. For people with eczema, contact dermatitis, rosacea, or simply reactive skin, these properties compound over the duration of a class into sustained irritation. Bellissima uses TENCEL Lyocell as the primary fiber specifically because its properties work against all three mechanisms. The fiber surface is microscopically smooth, it absorbs moisture into the fiber rather than across the surface, and cellulosic fibers do not generate static (Lenzing AG, 2023).

The Clinical Evidence for TENCEL on Sensitive Skin

TENCEL Lyocell is not just described as gentle — it has peer-reviewed clinical evidence behind that claim in the context of sensitive and atopic skin. A randomized controlled study by Stinco et al. (2015) found TENCEL Lyocell fabric contributed to reduced skin irritation markers in participants with eczema compared to conventional fabric controls. A separate study by Lübbe et al. (2016) found that TENCEL-containing garments were associated with improved skin barrier function in pediatric atopic dermatitis patients. This clinical base distinguishes TENCEL from fabrics that use marketing language around skin-friendliness without supporting evidence. Bellissima's sensitive skin activewear is 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex. The TENCEL fiber carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification at the fiber level through Lenzing AG, confirming the absence of over 100 substances of concern including known contact allergens.

Activity Range and Practical Notes

Bellissima's sensitive skin activewear is suited to yoga, pilates, barre, reformer, walking, and recovery movement. For people with active skin conditions, lower-intensity sessions where sweat output is moderate will typically be more comfortable than maximum-intensity training regardless of fabric. TENCEL Lyocell manages moderate sweat well; at peak sustained intensity, the absorption capacity can be exceeded and moisture can build at the skin surface. For most sensitive skin concerns in a studio context, this threshold is not reached. The finished garment does not hold OEKO-TEX certification at the product level. The fiber-level certification through Lenzing AG is the substantiated claim. Sizes XS to XL, black.

Is TENCEL activewear good for sensitive skin?

Yes. TENCEL Lyocell has a smooth fiber surface, absorbs moisture into the fiber rather than leaving it on skin, and does not generate static. Clinical studies have found TENCEL Lyocell associated with reduced skin irritation in eczema and atopic dermatitis patients (Stinco et al., 2015; Lübbe et al., 2016).

Why does polyester irritate sensitive skin?

Polyester has a microscopically rough fiber surface, does not absorb moisture, and generates static during movement. These three properties combine to create sustained friction and skin contact with sweat and dissolved body chemicals throughout a training session.

Is the fabric OEKO-TEX certified?

The TENCEL Lyocell fiber is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified at the fiber level through Lenzing AG, confirming the absence of over 100 substances of concern including known contact allergens. Bellissima does not currently hold finished-product OEKO-TEX certification.

Can I wear this activewear if I have eczema?

TENCEL Lyocell has clinical evidence supporting its use for eczema-prone and atopic skin. Consult a dermatologist for guidance specific to your condition. TENCEL Lyocell's smooth surface, moisture absorption profile, and absence of static make it a more skin-compatible choice than polyester for most eczema presentations.

What activities are these best suited for?

Yoga, pilates, barre, reformer, walking, and low-impact training. Moderate-intensity sessions where sweat output is controlled are most comfortable for sensitive skin in any fabric.
