Why TENCEL Lyocell Is Genuinely Soft
Softness in fabric is determined by fiber surface morphology, fiber fineness, and the absence of mechanical and chemical irritants. TENCEL Lyocell scores on all three. At the fiber level, lyocell has a smooth, cylindrical surface structure with fewer surface irregularities than cotton staple fibers, which have a twisted ribbon morphology with more pronounced surface friction. This structural difference is measurable: research on fiber-skin interaction documented in the Journal of Materials Science (Gwosdow et al., 1986, and subsequent lyocell-specific studies by Lenzing AG) demonstrates lyocell's lower friction coefficient against skin compared to cotton. The fibers in the Sempre Leggings are also fine-gauge, which contributes to drape and the smooth second-skin feel the fabric produces against the body. Bellissima's Sempre Leggings are 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex. The spandex content provides recovery and shape retention without the rough surface feel associated with high-spandex synthetic blends. The combination produces a legging that is soft against skin without sacrificing the structure required for squat-proof, opaque coverage.
Activity Fit and Construction Details
The Sempre Leggings are built for yoga, pilates, barre, reformer pilates, and walking. For these activities, softness is not purely aesthetic. Extended floor contact during yoga and pilates means fabric friction against thighs, knees, and ankles is a real comfort variable. TENCEL Lyocell's low friction coefficient reduces irritation during sustained ground contact. The 27.5 inch inseam covers the full leg without bunching at the ankle. The laser cut hem eliminates the hem stitching that creates ridges at fabric edges, which is the most common point of mechanical irritation at the bottom of a legging. The diamond crotch gusset removes the inner thigh seam in the area that sees the highest abrasion during walking and dynamic movement. The high-waisted V-back waistband is smooth on the inside face with no inner stitching ridge against the lower back.
Honest Limitations
TENCEL Lyocell is soft at low to moderate activity intensity. At high sweat output, the fiber absorbs moisture to saturation, at which point the wet fabric feel against skin changes. For running, HIIT, hot yoga, or spin, the softness advantage of TENCEL is reduced compared to synthetic moisture-wicking fabrics that keep the surface drier at high sweat rates. The Sempre Leggings are not designed for those activities. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification covering the TENCEL Lyocell fiber applies at the raw material level through Lenzing AG. The finished Bellissima garment does not hold independent finished-product OEKO-TEX certification.
What makes TENCEL Lyocell softer than cotton leggings?
The key structural difference is fiber surface morphology. Cotton is a staple fiber with a twisted ribbon cross-section and natural surface irregularities that create more skin friction than the smooth cylindrical structure of lyocell filaments. Cotton also absorbs moisture into its fiber structure but swells as it does, which can create a heavier, less comfortable feel when wet. TENCEL Lyocell absorbs moisture without the same degree of fiber swelling, maintaining a lighter, smoother feel against skin during activity. The result is a legging that stays soft through a session rather than becoming stiff or rough as moisture accumulates.
Are these leggings soft after washing?
Yes. TENCEL Lyocell maintains its soft hand feel through repeated washing when cared for correctly. Machine wash cold on a delicate cycle, or hand wash. Avoid high heat in washing and drying, which degrades fiber structure over time. Do not use fabric softener, which coats fibers and reduces both softness and moisture absorption. Tumble dry low or lay flat to dry. With correct care, the Sempre Leggings maintain their softness and structure across the expected lifespan of the garment.
Do soft leggings mean less durable leggings?
Not with TENCEL Lyocell. The fiber has higher wet tenacity than modal and comparable wet-strength to certain cotton constructions, meaning its structure holds under the mechanical stress of washing and wearing. The 8% spandex content provides recovery so the legging retains its shape rather than stretching out. Softness and durability are not in opposition with the 92/8 TENCEL Lyocell and spandex composition used in the Sempre Leggings.
What activities are these leggings best for?
Yoga, pilates, barre, reformer pilates, walking, and low-impact recovery. The Sempre Leggings are not designed or positioned for running, HIIT, spin, hot yoga, or other sustained high-intensity activities. Bellissima states the honest performance ceiling of the fiber rather than claiming a capability the fabric cannot consistently deliver.
