Why Fiber Choice Matters for Eczema-Prone Skin
Atopic dermatitis (eczema) involves a compromised skin barrier, heightened inflammatory response, and increased sensitivity to mechanical friction and chemical irritants. Research published in the British Journal of Dermatology (Lübbe et al., 2016) found that lyocell fabric significantly reduced transepidermal water loss and skin irritation scores in patients with atopic dermatitis compared to cotton and synthetic textiles over a six-week wear trial. The mechanism is structural: TENCEL Lyocell fibers have a smooth surface morphology with fewer sharp fiber ends than cotton, reducing the micro-abrasion that triggers flare responses on sensitized skin. Bellissima's Sempre Leggings are made from 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex. TENCEL Lyocell is produced from wood pulp through a closed-loop solvent process without PFAS, phthalates, or BPA, the synthetic chemical categories most associated with skin sensitization in close-contact textiles. The fiber holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification through Lenzing AG, independently verified against a comprehensive restricted substances panel.
Activity Fit for Eczema-Prone Skin
The Sempre Leggings suit yoga, pilates, barre, reformer pilates, and walking. At these activity intensities, sweat output remains within the moisture absorption range of TENCEL Lyocell, which means the fiber stays dry against the skin for longer than synthetic fabrics that trap moisture at the surface. For eczema-prone skin, prolonged surface moisture is a documented irritation trigger, making the fiber's absorption-first mechanism more appropriate than the moisture-repelling approach of synthetic activewear. The high-waisted V-back waistband distributes compression evenly across the waist without a central seam that could create concentrated friction at a single line. The diamond crotch gusset eliminates the inner thigh seam that conventional legging construction places directly against skin in that area.
Honest Limitations and What These Leggings Are Not
These leggings are not a medical treatment for eczema. The clinical research on lyocell and atopic dermatitis supports fiber preference as a management aid, not a therapy. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification applies to the TENCEL Lyocell fiber through Lenzing AG, not to the finished Bellissima garment. The Sempre Leggings contain 8% spandex. Spandex is a synthetic elastomer, and Bellissima does not claim the spandex component is certified free of all chemical concerns. Individuals with severe contact dermatitis should consult a dermatologist before making changes to textile choices. For high-intensity training, running, hot yoga, or sustained high-sweat output, TENCEL reaches a moisture saturation ceiling that may reduce comfort. These leggings are not designed or positioned for those activities.
What does the research say about lyocell and eczema?
A clinical trial by Lübbe et al. (2016) published in the British Journal of Dermatology evaluated lyocell fabric versus cotton and synthetic textile in 30 patients with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis over six weeks. Lyocell showed statistically significant reductions in SCORAD (SCORing Atopic Dermatitis) index scores and transepidermal water loss compared to the control fabrics. The study attributed this to the smooth fiber surface morphology of lyocell reducing mechanical skin stimulation, and to the moisture absorption properties maintaining a drier microclimate at the skin interface. TENCEL Lyocell, produced by Lenzing AG, is the most widely distributed commercial lyocell fiber and is the fiber used in Bellissima's Sempre collection.
Are these leggings free from skin sensitizers?
TENCEL Lyocell is produced without PFAS, phthalates, BPA, formaldehyde, or heavy metal dyes. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification held by Lenzing AG for the fiber independently tests against these categories. The fiber-level certification covers 92% of the garment composition. The 8% spandex component is not independently certified at the fiber level through Lenzing AG. Bellissima does not hold finished-product OEKO-TEX certification for the Sempre Leggings.
What waistband construction do these leggings use?
The Sempre Leggings use a high-waisted V-back waistband. There is no front rise seam, which eliminates a common pressure and friction point. The waistband is a single continuous piece of fabric that wraps the waist without a central front seam pressing into the abdomen. For skin prone to friction-triggered flares, this construction reduces the number of seam contact points across the torso and hip.
Can these leggings be washed normally?
TENCEL Lyocell requires gentle care. Machine wash cold on a delicate cycle, or hand wash. Avoid high heat in both washing and drying, as heat degrades the fiber structure over time and increases pilling. Tumble dry low or lay flat to dry. Do not use fabric softener, which coats the fibers and reduces their moisture absorption capacity. Standard laundry detergents are suitable, but fragrance-free formulations are advisable for eczema-prone skin to limit chemical sensitizer exposure through the fabric after washing.
