What Breastfeeding Women Need from Activewear Fabric
Breastfeeding places specific demands on the skin in contact with a bra. Nipple sensitivity during lactation is well-documented, and bra fabric that creates friction, surface abrasion, or retains moisture against the chest area compounds that sensitivity during and after exercise. Conventional synthetic sports bra fabrics, polyester and nylon, can trap surface moisture and have a surface texture that increases mechanical irritation compared to smooth cellulosic fibers. TENCEL Lyocell is a plant-derived cellulosic fiber with a smooth surface morphology and documented benefit for sensitive and atopic skin conditions (Lübbe et al., 2016, British Journal of Dermatology). The fiber absorbs moisture into its structure rather than holding it at the surface, which reduces the damp surface contact against sensitive chest skin during low to moderate exercise. It is also produced without PFAS, BPA, or phthalates, the synthetic chemical categories most associated with skin sensitization and endocrine disruption in close-contact textiles. Bellissima's Sempre Halter Bra and Sempre Twist Bra are made from 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex. Both include removable EVA foam pads. The TENCEL fiber holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification through Lenzing AG.
Critical Product Clarification
The Sempre Halter Bra and Sempre Twist Bra are sports bras. They are not nursing bras. Neither style has drop cups, clip closures, hook-and-eye nursing access, or any construction feature designed to allow feeding while wearing. They cannot be opened or adjusted for nursing without removing the bra entirely. Breastfeeding women who need nursing access during a workout or immediately after should source a dedicated nursing sports bra for that purpose. The Bellissima bras are positioned for this collection solely on the basis of TENCEL Lyocell's soft, non-irritating properties against lactation-sensitive chest skin during exercise. They are exercise bras worn by breastfeeding women, not nursing bras.
Activity Fit
The Sempre bras suit yoga, pilates, barre, reformer pilates, and walking. Both styles provide the support appropriate for these activity intensities. Neither the Halter nor the Twist Bra is designed for high-impact activity, running, or sustained high-sweat output. At these activity levels, TENCEL Lyocell remains within its moisture absorption range, which is the relevant performance variable for breastfeeding women who want the fiber's skin-comfort benefit during exercise. The fiber stays dry against the chest longer than moisture-repelling synthetic fabrics at low to moderate sweat output. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification applies to the TENCEL Lyocell fiber through Lenzing AG at the raw material level. The finished Bellissima garment does not hold independent finished-product OEKO-TEX certification.
Are these nursing bras?
No. The Sempre Halter Bra and Sempre Twist Bra have no nursing access. They do not open for feeding. They are sports bras made from soft, non-toxic TENCEL Lyocell fabric that breastfeeding women may find more comfortable against sensitive skin than conventional synthetic sports bras. Women who need nursing access during or between workouts should use a dedicated nursing sports bra.
Why does fiber choice matter for breastfeeding women during exercise?
Nipple and breast skin sensitivity during lactation increases the importance of bra fabric surface quality. TENCEL Lyocell's smooth fiber morphology produces less mechanical friction than synthetic knit surfaces. Its moisture absorption approach keeps the fabric surface drier against skin at low to moderate exercise intensity, reducing the prolonged damp contact that can aggravate sensitive skin. Clinical research documents lyocell's benefit for atopic and reactive skin (Lübbe et al., 2016), which is directly relevant to the skin sensitivity associated with breastfeeding.
What bra styles are included in this collection?
The Sempre Halter Bra and the Sempre Twist Bra. The Halter Bra has a halterneck front, backless design, and drop armhole. The Twist Bra has a V-cut front, a fabric twist at the back, a straight bottom hem, and a double-layered construction. Both include removable EVA foam pads and are available in sizes XS through XL.
What is the fiber composition and certification?
92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex. TENCEL Lyocell holds fiber-level OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification through Lenzing AG. The finished Bellissima garment does not hold independent finished-product OEKO-TEX certification. TENCEL Lyocell is produced without PFAS, BPA, or phthalates.
