Why Fiber Choice Matters in the Postpartum Period
Postpartum skin is frequently more reactive than usual. Hormonal fluctuation after birth is associated with increased skin sensitivity, and research on atopic dermatitis in the postpartum period documents elevated rates of new-onset and worsened eczema in the weeks and months following delivery (Stinco et al., 2015, Dermatology). For women returning to movement after pregnancy, close-contact activewear worn during yoga, pilates, barre, or walking is in sustained contact with this sensitized skin across large surface areas. Conventional synthetic activewear fabrics, polyester and nylon-spandex blends, have surface properties and chemical treatment profiles that can aggravate reactive skin. TENCEL Lyocell is a plant-derived cellulosic fiber with a smooth surface morphology that produces less mechanical friction than synthetic or cotton alternatives, and clinical research has documented its benefit for atopic and sensitive skin conditions (Lübbe et al., 2016, British Journal of Dermatology). Bellissima's Sempre collection is made from 92% TENCEL Lyocell and 8% spandex, and is produced without PFAS, BPA, or phthalate plasticizers. The TENCEL fiber holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification through Lenzing AG.
Activity Fit for Postpartum Return to Movement
The Sempre collection suits yoga, pilates, barre, reformer pilates, and walking. These are the activity categories most commonly recommended for postpartum return to movement, as they avoid the high-impact loading and intra-abdominal pressure demands of running or HIIT in the early recovery period. TENCEL Lyocell is well suited to these intensities. At low to moderate sweat output the fiber maintains a dry, soft feel against skin. The high-waisted V-back waistband in both the leggings and shorts sits firmly across the abdomen without a front rise seam pressing into the lower abdomen, which is relevant for women whose abdominal muscles and connective tissue are still recovering. All four pieces, leggings, shorts, halter bra, and twist bra, are included in this collection and cover the full range of postpartum activity needs at these intensity levels.
Important Product Clarifications
The Sempre collection is standard-fit activewear. It is not a postpartum-specific cut. There is no belly panel, no graduated compression zone for the abdomen, and no postpartum recovery construction. Women whose abdominal separation (diastasis recti) requires specific support should consult a pelvic floor physiotherapist before returning to exercise and regarding garment choices. The Sempre bras, both the Halter and the Twist, are not nursing bras. They do not have drop cups, clip closures, or nursing access construction of any kind. They are not suitable for feeding while wearing. The positioning of this collection is solely about the benefit of soft, non-toxic TENCEL Lyocell against postpartum-sensitive skin during exercise and recovery movement. Women should follow their healthcare provider's guidance on return-to-exercise timing and activity selection after delivery.
Is TENCEL Lyocell safe for postpartum skin?
The clinical evidence for lyocell and sensitive skin supports its use for atopic and reactive skin conditions. Research by Lübbe et al. (2016) documented reduced skin irritation scores in atopic dermatitis patients wearing lyocell compared to cotton and synthetic alternatives. TENCEL Lyocell is produced without the synthetic chemical categories most associated with skin sensitization in close-contact textiles. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification held by Lenzing AG independently verifies the fiber against a restricted substances panel. The finished Bellissima garment does not hold independent OEKO-TEX finished-product certification.
Can these bras be used for breastfeeding?
No. The Sempre Halter Bra and Sempre Twist Bra are standard sports bras with no nursing access. They do not have drop cups, clip openings, or any construction feature that allows feeding while wearing. They are not suitable as nursing bras.
What is the waistband construction on the leggings and shorts?
Both the Sempre Leggings and Sempre Shorts use a high-waisted V-back waistband with no front rise seam. The absence of a central front seam means there is no pressure point at the lower abdomen, which is relevant for postpartum wearers whose abdominal area may still be tender. The waistband holds position without rolling during gentle movement and low-impact activity.
What activities are these pieces best suited for?
Yoga, pilates, barre, reformer pilates, walking, and gentle recovery movement. The Sempre collection is not designed or positioned for running, HIIT, spin, or hot yoga. Bellissima recommends following healthcare provider guidance on return-to-exercise activity selection, particularly in the early postpartum period.
